Machismo overload?
Sep. 14th, 2009 07:23 pmEvery time I log into Yahoo Internet Messenger, it throws up a handful of the stories of the day. Some are interesting, others not. Some are uplifting, others enraging. Tonight, unfortunately, it was the turn of the enraging. It seems Kanye West can't keep himself from being stupid...
I thought it was a joke when Kanye showed up on the MTV Video Music Awards stage next to Taylor Swift, right in the middle of her acceptance speech for Best Female Video for "You Belong With Me." It was the first Moon Man for the 19-year-old country starlet, who has become an equally huge star in the pop world.
"I always dreamed about what it would be like to win one of these one day," Taylor said with surprise. "I never thought it would happen."
As Taylor continued, Kanye interrupted, saying he thought Beyonce's "Single Ladies" video was wrongly overlooked. "Hey Taylor, I'm really happy for you, but Beyonce had one of the best videos of all time."
The audience was unimpressed, and not without justification. Way to go, Mr West; gatecrash someone else's moment of glory, why don't you? And it's apparently not the first time he's made an idiot of himself like this.
As chance would have it, the lovely Ms Knowles did win an award later that night... for the exact same video to which Mr West had referred. Now I'm no raving fan of Ms Knowles, but I can't help but be deeply impressed with what she did when she got given the floor to receive her award:
"Wow, this is amazing," Beyonce said when receiving her award. "I remember being 17-years-old and up for my first MTV award with Destiny's Child. It was one of the most exciting moments in my life. So, I'd like for Taylor to come out and have her moment."
My hat goes off to one classy lady. As for Mr West, I can't help but agree with Pink...
"Kanye West is the biggest piece of sh-t on earth. Quote me."
Mr West's apology to Ms Swift was posted on his website. Apparently he spoke to her mother after the event. But did he speak to her, and did he have the guts to apologise to her face? If so, it would go a long way towards wiping the egg off of his.
